🌸 Overview
Get ready for a mystery in the post!In this hands-on communication and reasoning activity, your child will create and solve “mystery messages” using cardboard tubes and string. They’ll practice describing, predicting, and questioning - all while exploring how sound and materials work together.
Perfect for developing early language, turn-taking, and imagination, this is one of those activities that’s simple to set up yet full of “wow” moments.

🌿 What You’ll Explore
Literacy: Descriptive language, communication, sequencing, and story creation.
Science: Sound, vibration, and materials.
Social & Emotional: Teamwork, patience, and listening.
Fine Motor: Cutting, threading, and taping.
(Full learning outcomes, report phrases, and visual communication supports included in the printable pack.)
🪴 What You’ll Need
2 cardboard tubes (toilet rolls or kitchen rolls)
Long piece of string or yarn
Tape or blu-tack
Optional: small objects to “send” through the tube (buttons, paper messages)

✨ Quick How-To
1️⃣ Cut two small holes (one in each tube).
2️⃣ Thread the string through both and tie knots inside to hold.
3️⃣ Pull the string taut between you and your child - one speaks, one listens!
4️⃣ Take turns describing what you’re “sending” through the tube.
💡 Parent Tip: Encourage your child to describe without showing - it strengthens vocabulary and inference skills.

💚 Adapt for Every Age and Ability
Use real objects for non-verbal children - they can “post” items down the tube instead of speaking.
Add visual cue cards for common objects or emotions.
Simplify for toddlers by exploring sound only (“Can you hear me?”).
Challenge older kids to design their own “mail system” — can they make the sound travel further?
(Full SEN adaptations and communication card printables available inside the pack.)

🎨 Extension Ideas
Sound Scientist: Test different string lengths or materials: which carries sound best?
Mail Mission: Create paper “letters” and write short notes or drawings to send.
Story Post Office: Combine imagination and literacy: send clues that create a mystery story together!
Observation Journal: Record what worked best and why.
