🌸 Overview
🍂 Bring the outdoors in with this stunning 3D nature craft that grows as your child collects more leaves. Turn autumn walks into art!
In Crunchy Leaf Tree Art, parents (or older kids) paint a simple tree trunk and branches on a sturdy piece of card. Then, using a hole punch or pencil, create small “leaf holes” across the branches. As children collect real leaves - crisp, colourful, and full of texture - they “thread” or pierce them into the holes to make a 3D tree that changes every day.
It’s art that evolves - as the seasons (and your child’s imagination) do.
This activity grows and changes with your child’s discoveries. As the days pass, the tree can be refreshed with new leaves or petals, making it a perfect ongoing seasonal display.

🌿 What You’ll Explore
Science: Observation of seasonal change, colour variation, and leaf structure.
Art: Colour blending, texture, shape, and natural materials.
Fine Motor: Pinching, threading, and hand-eye coordination.
Language: Describing textures and colours using sensory-rich vocabulary.
Social & Emotional: Calm, mindful focus and appreciation for nature.
(Printable learning outcomes and subject-linked report phrases included in the full pack.)
🪴 What You’ll Need
Card or thick paper
Brown paint or marker for the trunk and branches
Hole punch, pencil, or skewer (for adult use)
A collection of autumn leaves in different colours and shapes
Optional: twigs, petals, pine needles, or small flowers
(Visual setup guide with checklist included in printable pack.)

✨ Quick How-To
1️⃣ Paint or draw your tree trunk and branches on a sturdy piece of card.
2️⃣ Once dry, punch small holes along the branches where leaves will attach.
3️⃣ Head outdoors with your child and collect a range of fallen leaves.
4️⃣ Invite them to thread or gently pierce the leaves into the holes to “grow” their tree.
💡 Parent Tip: This activity can be done slowly over a few days - perfect for calm moments or sensory regulation breaks.
💡 Parent Tip: For younger or SEN learners, pre-make the holes and provide larger leaves. Focus on feeling textures and matching colours rather than precision.
(Step-by-step visual guide included in printable pack.)

💚 Adapt for Every Age and Ability
Use larger leaves and pre-punched holes for younger or SEN learners.
Focus on the feeling of the leaves - "crunchy, soft, smooth" - rather than placement.
Offer visual Now/Next cards to simplify task steps.
Display finished trees as part of a “Season Station” to revisit and update.
(Full SEN adaptation guide and Now/Next visual schedule included in pack.)

🎨 Extension Ideas
Science Link: Sort and classify leaves by colour, shape, or texture and observe what changes as they dry.
Creative Twist: Add flower petals or green leaves to transform your tree into a “four seasons” display.
Maths Link: Count how many leaves of each colour were used: make a simple bar chart.
Sensory Addition: Crush spare leaves into “leaf confetti” for a crunchy sensory bin.
(Printable colour sorting chart, four seasons version, and bar chart worksheet included in pack.)
